As we travel through Norway’s coastal landscapes, fishing villages and deep fjords, we follow waterways that once connected the communities of the Norse world. The Norsemen were the people of medieval Scandinavia, including modern-day Norway, Sweden and Denmark, who shared the Old Norse language and a closely connected culture.

While all Vikings were Norsemen, not all Norsemen were Vikings. Most lived as farmers, fishers, craftspeople and traders. The word “Viking” described those who set out by sea to raid, trade, explore or establish new settlements. During the Viking Age, roughly 793 to 1066 CE, these expeditions carried Norse influence across Europe and as far as North America.

The Norse were not one unified people, but communities governed by local chieftains, jarls and kings. Travelling through Norway today, you can still appreciate how the landscape shaped their lives: the fjords provided natural highways, the sea offered food and opportunity, and their remarkable ships made distant journeys possible. This tour brings that history into focus as we ride through the very landscapes from which the Viking story emerged.
