Dining

The cuisine on this tour is one of its great pleasures, changing subtly as the landscapes change from Lyon to Bordeaux. We begin in Lyon, widely regarded as France’s gastronomic capital, where rich, hearty cooking and a deep food culture set the tone. Think classic bouchon fare, excellent cheeses, charcuterie, pâtés, quenelles, and a strong sense of regional pride around the table.

As the route heads south through the Rhône Valley, Ardèche and Cévennes, the food becomes more rustic and tied to the countryside. Seasonal produce, river fish, cured meats, olives, chestnuts, goat’s cheese, and simple dishes shaped by mountain and rural traditions.

Further west, in the Lot, Dordogne and Vézère valleys, the tour enters one of France’s most celebrated food regions. This is the land of duck, walnuts, truffles, foie gras, mushrooms, country pâtés, and beautifully prepared market produce.

In the final days, the route moves into Bergerac, Monbazillac, Saint-Émilion and Bordeaux, where wine takes centre stage alongside elegant southwestern cooking. Here, the cuisine becomes more refined but no less rooted in place, with superb local produce, memorable wine pairings, and a sense of abundance that makes the closing days of the tour feel especially celebratory.

Overall, this is a journey through some of the most rewarding food country in France, from rustic village cooking to world-class wine and gastronomy.

History

Discover the extraordinary heritage of our prehistoric ancestors in southern France

Our Cro-Magnon tour traces the story of the first modern humans in Europe through the landscapes where they once lived, travelled, created, and imagined. “Cro-Magnon” is the name given to early Homo sapiens whose remains were discovered in 1868 at Les Eyzies in the Dordogne, one of the key regions we visit on tour. Today, the term is used less often by archaeologists, but it remains a familiar way of describing the people of the Upper Palaeolithic, a period when modern humans spread across Europe and produced some of the world’s most extraordinary prehistoric art.

As the journey unfolds, we encounter the places that reveal just how sophisticated these people were. At Chauvet, Pech Merle, and Lascaux, we come face to face with powerful images of horses, lions, bison, mammoths, and handprints. Works created not as crude decoration, but as highly expressive and deeply meaningful art. These sites show us that prehistoric people were skilled observers of the natural world, imaginative storytellers, and capable of symbolic thought every bit as profound as our own. In Les Eyzies, often described as the capital of prehistory, the story becomes even more tangible, as we ride through the very landscape where Cro-Magnon man was first identified and where countless discoveries have reshaped our understanding of human origins.

What makes this history so compelling is not simply its age, but its relevance. This period marks a decisive chapter in the human story: the emergence of creativity, communication, adaptation, and shared culture on a recognisably modern level. The caves and valleys of southern France remind us that the desire to create, to record experience, and to make meaning from the world around us is ancient and enduring. By riding through these regions, we are not only exploring beautiful landscapes, but we are also travelling through Europe’s birthplace of ideas, imagination, and expressions of humanity that still resonate today.
