History

The 3 Islands

The histories of Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily are extraordinarily rich and layered, shaped by Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arabic, Norman, Renaissance and Baroque influences, as well as their more modern relationships with France and Italy. On tour, we experience this diversity not as a single story, but as a series of distinct island identities.

Corsica and Sardinia share a version of the Moor’s Head symbol for their flags, inherited from the Kingdom of Aragon. In Sardinia, the Four Moors are divided by the cross of St George. In Corsica, a single Moor’s head wears a white bandana, later raised above the eyes as a symbol of liberation under the 18th-century leader Pasquale Paoli. The emblem became especially meaningful during periods of foreign rule, including the era in which Napoleon grew up on Corsica.

Sicily’s symbol, the Trinacria, is even older and more complex. It features the head of Medusa surrounded by three bent legs and ears of wheat. The legs represent the island’s three capes, while the wheat reflects Sicily’s fertile land. Together, the symbol captures both the geography and mythology that have long shaped Sicilian identity.

To unite all three islands, we use the simpler Tanit symbol as this tour’s icon. Tanit was a Phoenician and Punic goddess worshipped across Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily from around the 5th century BC, giving these very different islands one ancient thread in common.
