Kviknes Hotel
Set on the edge of the Sognefjord, blending historic charm with comfort in a stunning fjordside setting. Family-run since 1877, it offers warm hospitality, Swiss-style architecture, and a rich legacy that’s welcomed everyone from royalty to artists.
Håholmen
A historic island village with 17th- and 18th-century charm, now home to 47 cosy fishermen’s cabins, a restaurant, and a small museum. The cabins blend traditional character with modern comfort. A unique place to stay right on the water.
Dining
Expect hearty, honest food rooted in Norway’s wild landscapes and coastal bounty. Seafood takes centre stage — think salmon, cod, herring and the iconic Lofotfisk from the Lofoten Islands. Traditional dishes like fårikål (lamb and cabbage stew) offer a taste of the countryside, while cloudberries and rye bread bring local flavour to the table. Meat lovers can sample game like reindeer, and plant-based travellers are well catered for, with options like vegan lefse (a soft flatbread) served with sweet or savoury fillings.
To drink, you’ll find craft beers, herb-infused aquavit, and even local wines — though international selections are often the better bet. Whether you’re a foodie or just along for the ride, Norway’s seasonal, sustainable cuisine is all part of the journey.
Eggen Restaurant
Sitting 708 metres above sea level atop Nesaksla Mountain, reachable via the scenic Romsdalsgondola. It serves modern Nordic cuisine with a creative twist, paired with breathtaking 360‑degree views of fjords and jagged peaks like Romsdalshorn and Vengetindene. A real highlight!
Vind Brasserie - Henningsvær Bryggehotell
Vind Brasserie offers a rich culinary experience in a space that is rustic, casual, and full of Northern Norwegian character. The kitchen opens up to the guests, allowing you to watch our chefs work their magic. The menu is carefully crafted with ingredients like seaweed, kelp, and fresh fish from the fishing village, all prepared with a passion that shines through in every dish.

History
Who were the Norsemen?
While all Vikings were Norsemen, not all Norsemen were Vikings, and that distinction matters. The term “Norsemen” refers broadly to people from Scandinavia (modern-day Norway, Sweden, and Denmark) during the early medieval period, particularly those who spoke Old Norse, a North Germanic language.
By contrast, the word “Viking” wasn’t a blanket ethnic term. It stems from the Old Norse word víkingr, meaning a sea raider or pirate, and was originally used more as a verb (to go viking), describing the act of setting out on expeditions for raiding, trading, or exploring by sea.
The Viking Age (roughly 793–1066 CE) marked a period of major expansion, when some Norsemen left their homelands to raid, trade, settle, and explore across Europe and beyond. Vikings were a subset of Norsemen who took part in this seafaring activity — whether for profit, conquest, or migration.
Importantly, the Norse peoples were not a unified nation at the time. Instead, they were organised into petty kingdoms and local chieftaincies (often led by jarls or kings). The idea of a cohesive “Viking people” is a modern simplification; in reality, “Viking” described an activity, not an ethnicity.
